The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
