Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
